🥛 Korean Banana Milk – Banana Uyu
Banana flavored milk, a popular Korean drink, was first introduced in South Korea by Binggrae in 1974. At that time, bananas were an expensive commodity, and milk consumption was low among Koreans. The introduction of banana milk aimed to increase the consumption of milk by offering a delicious and affordable alternative to regular milk.
When banana flavoring was added to the dairy drink, it captured the attention of the South Korean public, resulting in its growing popularity. Today, Binggrae banana milk has become a staple treat in South Korea, enjoyed by millions.

📝 Ingredients
- Banana: use a ripe, well-speckled banana for the sweetest flavor
- Milk: You can use any type of milk, dairy or nondairy. For dairy you can use whole milk or skim milk. For a dairy-free beverage try oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk.
- Water – A little water gives the drink the perfect consistency. If you prefer, you can use all milk. Using cold water keeps the milk cold and refreshing.
- Optional Sweetener: For a little added sweetness you can add a spoon of sugar, honey, maple syrup, or sugar substitute.
(You can find the full measurements and instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.)
👩🍳 Variations:
- Chocolate Banana – add a tablespoon of cocoa or a spoon or two of chocolate syrup. If using chocolate syrup, omit the sugar
- Strawberry Banana – replace half of the banana with an equal volume of strawberries
- Banana Caramel – replace the sweetener with a spoon of easy homemade caramel sauce to taste.
- Spiced Banana – Add a dash of cinnamon
- Banana Smoothie - replace the water with milk and add a few ice cubes
🥄 How to make
Step 1: Add the bananas, milk, water, and any optional sweetener to a blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth and frothy. Serve immediately.
💡 Tips:
- Use ripe, spotted bananas for the sweetest flavor.
- The combination of milk and water gives a silky texture.
- If you leave out the water and use only milk, you will have a banana smoothie with a thicker texture.
- Make sure the milk and water are cold. Banana milk tastes best when cold. If you want it even colder, serve it over ice cubes.
- Using frozen bananas will keep the drink colder, however it may thicken it somewhat.
- Use a high-speed blender for a smooth, creamy texture.
- If you don’t have a high-powered blender, you can strain the milk through a fine mesh strainer.
- Serve immediately – It will start to separate, and the bananas will begin to oxidize and brown quickly so make it just before you plan to drink it.
🍽️ Serve With
Enjoy banana milk over cereal or oatmeal. It's really fantastic over my double chocolate granola or homemade honey almond granola topped with slices of fresh bananas. Or serve it with a super moist banana blondie or a slice of this easy chocolate chip banana bread.
🧺 Storage
It is best to drink the milk immediately as it will start to discolor and separate quickly. If you have to store it for later, you can refrigerate it in an airtight container for a day. Shake it well before drinking.

We like sugar in ours, or sugar substitute like allulose, because it doesn’t interfere with the pure taste of the bananas. You could also make it with honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or any sweetener you prefer.
