Super easy to make
Simply blend a few common ingredients that you probably already have on hand. You can simply stir them together or grind them to a powder in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.
Save money making your own
Those little jars of spice blends are expensive! Save money by blending your own.
Run out of Poultry Seasoning in the middle of a recipe?
Need a poultry seasoning substitute? I hate it when I’m in the middle of a recipe and I run out of an ingredient. Save yourself a trip to the supermarket and mix up your own Poultry Seasoning.
Save space in your spice cupboard
The last thing I need is one more jar of spices taking up space in my spice cupboard.
Ingredients
McCormick is the brand of Poultry Seasoning that we have always used so I based this recipe off of theirs. Reading the label, it lists the ingredients in poultry seasoning as (in order of predominance):
- Thyme
- Sage
- Marjoram
- Rosemary
- Black pepper
- Nutmeg
DIY Poultry Seasoning is versatile
You can substitute an ingredient or leave one out based on what you have at home. You can increase one ingredient and decrease another.
Don’t have marjoram? Since it’s a milder, close relative of oregano, just use a smaller amount of oregano in the recipe.
Tweak the recipe to make your own blend
Consider this recipe a basic starting point. While these are the most common ingredients in poultry seasoning (and the ingredients in McCormick Poultry Seasoning), other ingredients I’ve come across are: savory, oregano, parsley, coriander, garlic powder, onion powder, celery flakes or seeds, lemon peel, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, bell pepper, white pepper, and cayenne pepper.
What's it used for?
While Poultry Seasoning is a must have seasoning for traditional Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing, it’s also used to flavor roast chicken, gravy, pot pies, soups, veggie burgers.
Rub it on chicken, turkey, veal, beef, or lamb. It may also be used as a seasoning for food dishes such as casseroles, chicken dishes, meatloaf, vegetables, stews, herbed breads, herb sauces, marinades, and many favorite recipes.
How to make
How you mix together the Poultry Seasoning will depend on how finely ground you’d like your Poultry Seasoning to be. You can simply mix them together. Or you can grind them in a mortar and pestle or in a spice grinder.
I have a coffee grinder that I use only for spices. It’s cheap and a great investment. Whole spices last so much longer than ground spices and you can grind them up fresh whenever you need them.

Had always used McCormick poultry seasoning for turkey stuffing until we discovered daughter allergic to marjoram, one of the ingredients. Thanks to you, can make without it!
Kelly
So happy you found it useful, Sheree! Thank you!

Andrea

I have made many a spice mix but never one for poultry spices - what a fabulous idea! And all your pics area amazing as well! So many lovely props!
Thank you for all your inspirations!

I just LOVE the smell of poultry seasoning!! And this is fabulous for making your own! I had no idea nutmeg was in it!!
Kelly
It's the smell of Thanksgiving to me! The nutmeg seems to round out the flavors of the herbs. Thanks so much, Kelly!
Susan
I love making my own spice blends and this one sounds great! I have a small coffee grinder and the only thing I use it for is grinding spices. It's fun too 🙂
Kelly
It's so much fresher that way! Thanks so much, Susan!
Haylie / Our Balanced Bowl
How amazing is this, Kelly?! I always opt for homemade seasonings vs storebought so I will definitely be adding this to my list to make this holiday season!
Kelly
Haylie, it's so much fresher and it's cheaper. The penny pincher in me can't bear to pay the ridiculously high price on those little bottles of spice blends. Thanks so much!
David @ Spiced
I absolutely love making my own spices! Part of it is just the fact that you can tweak the mixture to meet your tastes, but the other part is you save so much money! I'm always shocked at the prices of seasonings in the store. I try to find them in bulk when I can, but it's not easy. Either way, thanks so much for sharing this poultry seasoning blend. Perfect timing, my friend!
Kelly
David, my cupboard is stocked with all sorts of whole spices. Armed with that and a spice grinder, homemade seasonings are easy to mix, much fresher, and much less expensive. I usually find better deals on spices in ethnic markets. Supermarket spice blends are so overpriced. Thanks so much!
Cheyanne @ No Spoon Necessary
I love love love homemade seasonings!! They are a million times more flavorful than store bought varieties, plus I love being able to control what's actually in them. This poultry seasoning is the perfect multi-use seasoning to have on hand! Can't wait to make it!
Kelly
They're so much more flavorful homemade! I also love how fresh they are. Ground spices lose their potency so fast. Thanks so much, Chey!
David Scott Allen
For someone who makes most of his own condiments, I cannot believe that I haven’t thought to make my own poultry seasoning! This is brilliant, Kelly. Thanks so much for sharing!
Kelly
David, I have a cupboard full of whole spices and spice grinder so I make all my own seasonings. They're so much fresher and potent freshly ground. Thanks so much!
sherry
i haven't heard of poultry seasoning before but it sounds like a great idea to make your own. you can choose your fave spices...
Kelly
Sherry, I use poultry seasoning mainly on turkey and in stuffing at Thanksgiving time. The pre-blended mixes can be a little expensive and since I have everything on hand, I can blend up the exact amount I need without any going to waste - or taking up space in the cupboard. Thanks so much!
Alexandra @ It's Not Complicated Recipes
Such a great idea, Kelly! Save money and have a great spice blend that tastes better! Delicious 🙂
Kelly
Yes, and somehow I always run out of things like that on the day I'm cooking! Thanks so much, Alexandra!
Marissa
What a great idea to make your own poultry seasoning! I always have the individual components on hand, so why not mix them myself? Thank you for the inspiration!
Kelly
Marissa, I find the premade spice blends a little too pricey, especially when I already have all of the ingredients. I also find it fresher to grind my own. Once they've ground it, it seems to lose its potency pretty quickly. Thanks so much!

Angie, I hate paying more when I have all the ingredients already in my cupboard! Thanks so much!
